BOARD EXTENDS WILDFIRE PRICE GOUGING PROTECTIONS

June 24th, 2025

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisors Lindsey P. Horvath and Kathryn Barger to extend housing price gouging protections through July 31, 2025 for residents still displaced by the devastating January 2025 wildfires.

This action builds on the Board’s first declaration of a local emergency on January 7, 2025, activating housing price gouging protections under state and local law. This latest extension is authorized under state law, which permits local governments to renew protections every 30 days when necessary to protect life, property, or public welfare.

“The fires may have been six months ago, but for too many, recovery is still ongoing—and unfortunately, that’s exactly when bad actors try to strike,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “Price gouging protections are essential to making sure our communities can rebuild without being exploited. In Los Angeles County, we must not stand by while vulnerable residents are taken advantage of. If you suspect price gouging, report it to our Department of Consumer and Business Affairs so we can hold these bad actors accountable.”

“In the aftermath of unimaginable loss, wildfire survivors deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing they won’t be priced out of their communities,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger. “Extending these protections is a vital step that provides stability and dignity as families continue their rebuilding journey. We have a responsibility to stand with them and ensure that recovery is not exploited for profit.”

The motion extends through July 31, 2025 County enforcement of housing-related price gouging protections that limit rent and hotel rate increases during a declared emergency and prohibit evictions followed by relisting at higher prices.
