SUPERVISOR HORVATH HIGHLIGHTS LA COUNTY EL NIÑO PREPARATIONS, HOW RESIDENTS CAN PREPARE NOW

August 24, 2026

LOS ANGELES, CA — As dangerously hot temperatures return to Los Angeles County, Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath is urging residents to prepare for the heat and highlighting County resources available now to help Angelenos keep their homes cool and safe.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the San Fernando Valley through Tuesday morning and an Extreme Heat Watch from Tuesday morning through Friday evening. Temperatures in the western San Fernando Valley could reach 112 degrees Wednesday, with communities including Woodland Hills, Northridge, Van Nuys, and Chatsworth facing some of the most extreme temperatures.

“When it is over 100 degrees outside, staying cool at home is a matter of health and safety,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “That is why we fought for indoor heat protections in Los Angeles County. While enforcement begins next year, families don’t have to wait for help. Resources are available today to help renters stay safe and property owners prepare their homes. During extreme heat, let’s look out for one another, check in on your neighbors, and make sure everyone in our communities has a safe place to stay cool.”

Beginning in January 1, 2027, enforcement will begin on Los Angeles County’s indoor heat ordinance requiring rental units in unincorporated Los Angeles County to maintain a maximum indoor temperature of no more than 82°F. Property owners can use solutions including insulation, shading, window coverings, fans and other cooling measures to meet the standard. Landlords and tenants are encouraged to begin preparing now, with County resources available to help make homes cooler and safer.

Resources are available now through the County’s Cool Healthy Homes program:

  • Stay Cool: Find simple steps to keep your home cooler during extreme heat at the How to Stay Cool page.
  • Renters: Learn about indoor heat protections and tenant rights at Cool Healthy Homes’ Tenant Rights page.
  • Property Owners: Find guidance, contractors, energy assessments, and assistance for cooling and electrical upgrades through the Property Owner Support page.
  • $300 AC Savings: Eligible Clean Power Alliance residential CARE or FERA customers can receive a $300 instant coupon toward an eligible ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioner through the Instant AC Savings Program.

Residents without air conditioning are encouraged to use cooling centers, libraries, community centers, and other air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day. Residents can also call 211 for help locating cooling resources near them.

Learn more about keeping your home cool, safe, and healthy at coolhealthyhomes.org.
