LOS ANGELES, CA — In response to a motion introduced by Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath on May 5, 2026, Los Angeles County Public Works has released a written report outlining immediate actions to further strengthen safety at Whiteman Airport.
The report details a series of proposed safety enhancements responsive to community concerns and recommendations developed by the Whiteman Airport Community Advisory Committee. These actions follow the April 20, 2026 aircraft crash near the airport in Pacoima.“The safety of our Pacoima community members is urgent and nonnegotiable,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “This report outlines immediate actions the County can take to strengthen safety, improve transparency, and continue direct engagement with residents as broader conversations about the airport’s future move forward. While the federal investigation remains ongoing, we owe our communities accountability and a continued commitment to pursuing every available measure to reduce risk and enhance safety in our community.”
Among the proposed actions included in the report are:
- Quarterly pilot safety seminars focused on operational safety and local airspace conditions;
- Runway and taxiway pavement rehabilitation and upgraded markings;
- Expanded community outreach and airport safety communications; and
- Consideration of a future FAA Part 150 Noise Compatibility Study to evaluate long-term operational compatibility and mitigation strategies.
The report also outlines the respective responsibilities of the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, LA County Public Works, the City of Los Angeles, and other agencies and stakeholders responsible for aviation safety oversight and emergency response.The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration continue investigating the April 20 crash and are expected to issue final findings and safety recommendations at a later date.
The County is in communication with the Federal Aviation Administration and is encouraging their participation in future community meetings.
A verbal presentation and discussion before the Board of Supervisors is anticipated in the coming weeks.
