Supervisor Horvath Welcomes Malibu Residents Back for First Phase of Repopulation

December 12, 2024

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Franklin Fire has remained burning around 4,000 acres and is 20% contained. Last night, the red flag warning ended, and firefighters were able to accelerate containment to now permit the first phase of repopulation. Residents with homes along the Pacific Coast Highway will begin returning home today, December 12th.

“Starting today, residents with homes along PCH can begin returning. This moment marks a significant step forward in our recovery, but it’s just the beginning. I want to emphasize how critical it is to continue following instructions from emergency personnel as they guide us through a safe and orderly return,” said Supervisor Lindsey Horvath. “On Monday, we were in crisis. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the heroic effort of first responders to contain and stabilize the fire means that today, people are going home.”

Mandatory evacuation orders have been partially lifted, and evacuation warnings remain in effect. Road closures are ongoing in impacted areas. Exact locations are available on protect.genasys.com. Residents are strongly urged to follow all evacuation orders and guidance from emergency personnel. For real-time updates and emergency alerts, visit lacounty.gov/emergency.

While the beginning of repopulation is important progress, the Franklin Fire’s impacts on the landscape still includes risks. Department of Public Works engineers will be available to Malibu property owners for free advice on erosion control and debris flow as soon as safety permits, by calling 800-675-HELP.
