SUPERVISOR HORVATH RESPONDS AFTER BOARD VOTES DOWN PRICE GOUGING EXTENSION FOR WILDFIRE SURVIVORS
May 19th, 2026
LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors failed to approve Supervisor Horvath’s extension of wildfire-related price gouging protections for renters and survivors impacted by the Palisades and Eaton Fires. The protections, which limit excessive price increases on rent and building materials—and other exploitative pricing practices—during a declared emergency, are now set to expire on May 28, 2026.
“I’m deeply disappointed a majority of my colleagues voted not to renew wildfire price gouging protections for Los Angeles County renters and survivors. We continue hearing from residents who are struggling to recover financially and stay housed as they rebuild. I’m grateful to Supervisor Solis for standing with survivors and recognizing that recovery is still an ongoing process for many across our communities.
To renters impacted by the fires: May 28 now marks the last day of County price gouging protections will remain in effect. Recovery does not end on an arbitrary timeline, and our responsibility to protect people from exploitation should not either. I will keep fighting to protect wildfire survivors through each stage of recovery, despite pressure to do otherwise.”
Under current emergency protections, landlords and businesses are prohibited from imposing excessive increases on rents and essential goods tied to the declared emergency period. Following the expiration of these protections, impacted renters and wildfire survivors may face increased vulnerability to displacement, increased costs for rebuilding materials and services, as well as housing cost increases as recovery continues. Local rent stabilization laws and state tenant protections under AB 1482 remain in place, but some renters including those in single family homes will now be vulnerable to unrestricted rent increases.
Since the beginning of the 2025 wildfires, Supervisor Horvath has continuously advocated for extending protections for wildfire survivors and renters throughout the County’s long-term recovery efforts.
