SUPERVISOR HORVATH SECURES EXTENSION OF PRICE GOUGING PROTECTIONS FOR FIRE-IMPACTED RESIDENTS

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion in a 3-0-2 vote by Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath to extend key price gouging protections for residents impacted by the 2025 wildfires, as families remain displaced and continue to navigate recovery.
“As families rebuild from the Palisades and Eaton Fires—especially families of color bearing the heaviest financial burden—we cannot allow rents to spike overnight,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “Seven in ten fire survivors are still not home, and Los Angeles County has a duty to support them through recovery. Without these protections, displaced renters could face increases of 50 to 100 percent the moment they expire. That is not recovery—it’s abandonment. I will continue fighting to keep fire survivors housed so they can focus on a safe, full recovery.”
The motion extends existing limits on price increases for rental housing, goods, and services for an additional 30 days, as many families remain displaced and continue to face financial pressures during recovery. It also removes hotel and motel rate restrictions, as few displaced residents remain in those accommodations, and allows for seasonal pricing flexibility.
The action maintains updated rent provisions for certain units not previously on the rental market, aligning protections with current housing conditions while preserving safeguards against excessive increases.
