SUPERVISOR HORVATH CALLS FOR STATE TRANSPARENCY ON LANDFILL DEBRIS PLAN
February 18, 2025
LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath shares the following statement in response to community concerns regarding landfills receiving fire debris. Item 29 on today’s Board of Supervisors agenda has been continued to next Tuesday, February 25.
“This is a bureaucratic disaster. It is unacceptable and it must end.
Every level of government has failed to provide the basic information our communities deserve on the plan for fire debris disposal.
The Board of Supervisors does not ultimately decide where and how waste is disposed. The Army Corps decides where to take debris based on the state-approved, licensed locations. We need the State to own the authority they hold for selecting, licensing, and ensuring the safety of surrounding communities for landfills across the California–including those that will receive fire debris.
I am incredibly disappointed about how we got to this point. Officials should have proactively communicated with all of us about how we are rolling this out and how this affects our residents, which is why we scheduled virtual town halls. Unfortunately, the answers we have gotten are insufficient at best, and have caused even further confusion.
I have been asking the questions our communities need answered. We are still waiting for those answers, which is why Item 29 was continued to next Tuesday’s Board meeting. I expect all relevant parties to coordinate and communicate with our communities in advance, including proposed haul routes. In the absence of that, I won’t support an incomplete plan.”
