BOARD APPROVES PILOT PROGRAM TO ALLOW DRONE FILMING AT VENICE BEACH IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL FILMING

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath’s motion to establish a Drone Pilot Program for Filming at Venice Beach was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors. The pilot program will support the region’s entertainment industry while ensuring public safety and environmental protections.
“Los Angeles County is committed to advancing film policy in a way that is safe, responsible, and relevant to the changing needs of the industry,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “As we’ve seen with Baywatch, success depends on how effectively we work together to solve challenges. This drone pilot reflects that commitment—helping productions thrive while protecting our communities and allowing our iconic beaches to shine for viewers across the globe.”
The proposal comes as filming for the ‘Baywatch’ reboot continues at Venice Beach, bringing jobs, supporting local businesses, and reinforcing Los Angeles County’s role as a global entertainment hub.
The pilot program will allow drone use exclusively for permitted film and television productions through July 31, 2026, with strict requirements including FAA-certified pilots, approved flight plans, restricted operating hours and zones, and environmental safeguards. The program would be administered by FilmLA.
Following the pilot, the County will evaluate results and consider recommendations for a long-term program.
