SUPERVISOR HORVATH APPLAUDS APPROVED ORDER OF ABATEMENT FOR ODORS AT SUNSHINE CANYON LANDFILL
March 19th, 2025
LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Hearing Board approved an Order of Abatement to address odors at Sunshine Canyon Landfill—an action was supported by LA County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. With this approval, the operator, Browning-Ferris (Republic), will be held accountability to specific odor remediation actions.
“I have consistently fought for accountability and real solutions to address odor issue at Sunshine Canyon Landfill impacting the communities of Granada Hills and Sylmar,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “The approval of the abatement order is an important step to provide meaningful action by the landfill operator. These issues have persisted for too long, and I will continue to stay engaged in monitoring odors and other impacts to improve quality of life for our residents in the San Fernando Valley.”
Ahead of today’s hearing, Supervisor Horvath submitted a letter to SCAQMD to take decisive enforcement action and implement clear remediation requirements for the landfill operator.
Supervisor Horvath has been at the forefront of efforts to address the issues at Sunshine Canyon Landfill since coming into office. Last year, she ordered an independent audit of landfill operations to assess odor control measures and identify both immediate and long-term solutions. These recommendations informed the abatement measures approved by SCAQMD. Supervisor Horvath also created and convened regular meetings of the Sunshine Canyon Inter-Agency Working Group, which brings together county, city, state, and federal agencies—including SCAQMD—to ensure transparency and coordinated oversight of the landfill.
A status hearing on abatement actions will be held on September 3, 2025. For more information on these hearings visit: https://www.aqmd.gov/home/news-events/community-investigations/sunshine-canyon-landfill.
