METRO BOARD ADVANCES K LINE NORTHERN EXTENSION, SAN VICENTE-FAIRFAX ALIGNMENT WITHOUT DELAY

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, the Metro Board of Directors took a major step toward transforming how Angelenos move across the city, voting to advance the K Line Northern Extension, San Vicente-Fairfax Alignment. The decision moves forward a game changing, decades-in-the-making project designed to connect communities, cut commute times, and improve access to jobs, housing, and cultural institutions.

The 9.7-mile extension will connect the South Bay to Inglewood and LAX through Crenshaw, Mid-City, and the Fairfax District to West Hollywood, Hollywood, and the Hollywood Bowl—creating the first continuous north-south rail line through the heart of the LA basin. By linking four major rail lines and six of the region’s busiest bus corridors, the project will transform a fragmented system into one that works for how people actually live and travel.

“This is a transformational moment for Los Angeles. Today’s approval of the K Line Northern Extension San Vicente–Fairfax alignment will finally connect communities and make it possible to travel from LAX to the Hollywood Bowl on one line,” said Supervisor and Metro Board Member Lindsey P. Horvath. “This amendment delivers both urgency and certainty. With the leadership of Mayor Bass and Mayor Heilman, we are investing intentionally in connection, community, and opportunity, while answering the fierce urgency of a rising generation counting on us to get this right—and get the K Line North done now.”

“This is how you build a city where opportunity is within reach, by connecting people to jobs, housing, healthcare, and each other through a system that works,” said Councilwoman and Metro Board Member Katy Yaroslavsky. “Today’s vote reflects real collaboration, and I want to thank Mayor Bass, Supervisor Horvath, and Mayor Heilman for working through complex issues to reach an agreement that makes this moment possible.”

“I’m thrilled that the Metro Board has voted affirmatively to move forward with the K Line Northern Extension,” said City of West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman. “I’m grateful for the leadership of L.A. County Third District Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, Jr., and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in advancing this project and continuing to expedite the environmental review process. The San Vicente-Fairfax alignment will serve the greatest number of people and connect with key east-west transit lines. It will be truly transformative for West Hollywood and communities across Los Angeles County.”

The K Line Northern Extension is expected to serve approximately 100,000 riders each day, connect 125,000 jobs within walking distance of stations, and serve more than 325,000 residents who rely on transit. It will also unlock access to hundreds of destinations across the region, making it easier for Angelenos to reach jobs, education, healthcare, and essential services.

In addition to improving mobility, the project is projected to create more than 10,000 union construction jobs, generate $9.7 billion in union wages, and generate over $22 billion in economic activity for Los Angeles County.

With sections 2 and 3 of the alignment approved, the City of West Hollywood will begin the process of establishing an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD) that will generate approximately $2.25 billion in financing for the project.
