SUPERVISOR HORVATH, METRO CEO WIGGINS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS KICK OFF CLEAN AIR DAY & SOCAL TRANSIT MONTH WITH METRO RIDE-ALONG

September 25th, 2025
LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, LA County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath joined LA Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins, Move LA, and the Coalition for Clean Air to launch the eighth annual California Clean Air Day and SoCal Transit Month with a press conference at the Hall of Administration, followed by a Metro ride from Civic Center/Grand Park to Union Station ahead of the Metro Board of Directors meeting. The partners reaffirmed LA County’s clean air commitments and stood against federal rollbacks that threaten hard-won air quality progress.
“Los Angeles County is committed to building healthy communities where clean air is the foundation. Transit is how we create that future together,” said Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “Every time we choose the bus or train over sitting in traffic, we’re choosing to protect our lungs, our climate, and our children’s future. Clean Air Day is more than a pledge—it’s a commitment to ourselves and to each other that we will act boldly for the air we all breathe. Here in Los Angeles County we have both the responsibility and the opportunity to lead by example—so that every resident can thrive.”
“Metro is growing by leaps and bounds and making transit better for everyone by making it cleaner, safer and more comfortable for our riders,” said Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins. “We encourage everyone in LA County to Go Metro on California Clean Air Day, and every day, to help improve air quality and public health.”
“Riding transit is for everyone, and it was great to celebrate SoCal Transit Month with CEO Wiggins and Supervisor Lindsey Horvath on their commute to the Metro Board meeting. Transit Month is about celebrating the joy of public transit and the freedom it creates to get around, get your email done, play games, read, and not get stuck in soul-crushing traffic! With nearly one million riders every day using transit to get to school, work, medical appointments, grocery shopping, or just to see family and friends, Metro is the way to go for Clean Air Day,” said Eli Lipmen, Executive Director of Move LA.
“Clean air is not just an environmental issue, it’s an education issue,” said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools. “When our students can breathe freely, they can learn, thrive and reach their full potential. As educators, we have a responsibility to champion cleaner air for every child, because healthy classrooms are the foundation of strong communities and brighter futures.”
The morning began with a press conference where leaders outlined priorities to protect and advance clean air standards, accelerate zero-emission transportation, and expand reliable transit access across LA County. Afterward, the officials and media walked together to Civic Center/Grand Park Station and rode one stop on the B/D Line to Union Station, modeling convenient, car-free travel to public meetings.
Looking ahead, California Clean Air Day will take place on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, when Metro and participating Southern California transit agencies will offer free rides to encourage residents to try transit and reduce emissions. Angelenos of all ages are invited to take the Clean Air Day Pledge and commit to at least one action for cleaner air.
This regional kick-off underscored the role of public transit in improving air quality, advancing local climate goals, and connecting residents to work, school, and healthcare. By choosing transit—especially on free-ride day—Angelenos can help cut pollution and congestion while supporting equitable, sustainable mobility.
